Virus and Malware Information
Viruses - these are destructive programs, usually a single file, that try to infect other files and or disks. They also can have destructive payloads that are meant to corrupt the information on a system.
Trojans - these can be picked up from many sources and in particular certain so called "free" programs, opening certain types of emails or visiting certain dodgy websites etc. Their mission can be quite varied too, some live to collect information found on your system, where you go on the internet and then send this information back to the author of the malware. Others are used to gain "backdoor" access to your system so the author can use or take over your computer for their own uses. Antivirus programs have more trouble finding this type of malware because the trojans are actually made to hide from them.
Worms - these are similar to viruses in that they live to infect but their targets are other computers on a network. These also can be contained in emails and news feeds or just travel the internet to your computer. Like trojans, they also are usually programmed to hide from antivirus programs if they can.
Spyware - these usually contains varying levels of threats from the very minor to others that are probably worse that all of the above malware. Often these contain trojans but other malware can also be included. Peer to peer (P2P) software is reknowned for installing this type of malware. Antivirus programs are less than effective in cleaning them and sometimes even experienced PC users can be out-done by them. For inexperienced PC users the results can be catastrophic!
